X-ray computed tomography investigations of Cucuteni ceramic statuettes:

2013

Deciphering the internal structure of prehistoric artefacts can provide spectacular insights that might help us understand the people who made them. In order to preserve the integrity of these relics of past civilisations, it is desirable to make such investigations using non-destructive techniques. Recent decades have witnessed a growth in the X-ray computed tomography (CT) applications in the study of cultural heritage objects. This paper presents and discusses tomographic investigations of two Cucuteni ceramic statuettes discovered in Romania. The study was made with a CT device specially designed for archaeometric applications.

Microstructural Study of Asphalt Mixture Containing Reclaimed Material

2012

In this paper mixing of reclaimed material with virgin asphalt material has been studied non-destructively. Specimens prepared with virgin asphalt mix and with asphalt mix containing reclaimed material were scanned in X-ray Computed tomography (CT). The obtained Images were analysed for particles and pores (air voids) distribution. All the specimens were also tested in compression test and X-ray scanned while testing. It was found that distribution of reclaimed is not uniform through the samples. There is no considerable effect of increasing the mixing time on particles' distribution. Similar trend of increase in air voids (cracks) with the increase in load was found for both virgin mix and…

Liver involvement in patients with COVID-19 infection: A comprehensive overview of diagnostic imaging features

2023

During the first wave of the pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection has been considered mainly as a pulmonary infection. However, different clinical and radiological manifestations were observed over time, including involvement of abdominal organs. Nowadays, the liver is considered one of the main affected abdominal organs. Hepatic involvement may be caused by either a direct damage by the virus or an indirect damage related to COVID-19 induced thrombosis or to the use of different drugs. After clinical assessment, radiology plays a key role in the evaluation of liver involvement. Ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be use…

X-ray computed tomography and numerical analysis of water-saturated porous materials

2012

A method for imaging a water-saturated porous material is developed in order to simulate a fluid flow through it using the Lattice Boltzmann method. The value of its flow permeability is compared to the value for the same sample when it is dry. An explanation for the difference in the experimental values of permeability for air and water is sought. A reference is given by experimental values from flow measurements that are interpreted according to Darcy's law of permeability.

Reclaimed asphalt test specimen preparation assisted by image analysis

2015

This paper presents a laboratory investigation aimed at establishing a protocol for the production of homogeneous asphalt mixtures test specimens, incorporating reclaimed asphalt by using a gyratory compactor with coring and trimming works. Stone mastic asphalt specimens were compacted at the previously identified target densities with the final aim of obtaining specimens with a fixed and homogeneous air void distribution. A microstructural study was conducted to characterize the homogeneity in the air void distribution using X-ray computed tomography (CT) combined with image analysis techniques. The study concluded that the gyratory compactor is suitable for producing homogeneous test spec…

X-ray Computed Tomography for Capillary Collapse of Loose Unsaturated Sand

2016

Abstract The collapse of unsaturated soils consists of the reduction in volume upon wetting at constant total stress. Several studies at the macro scale outline the influence of initial void ratio, confining pressure and matric suction on the onset of collapse of standard laboratory specimens. Conversely, few observations at the micro scale are available in the literature, although the influence of the particles arrangement and intergranular bonding has been formerly supposed. The collapse of fine sand derived by a pyroclastic soil of Southern Italy is investigated in this paper at the microscale using the X-ray Computed Tomography. The experimental procedure, formerly tested on similar pyr…
